RVK designed this new six-story office building located on an existing wooded inner-city lot. The building program required the development to locate the building around all the existing heritage trees. During the conceptual phase, this allowed a large courtyard to be developed and provide a heavily shaded break-out space off the planned event center on the first floor. The owner expressed their preference for the exterior of the building to reflect the old-world charm of the historic Rio Grande Valley. The exterior elements included burnished block wainscot, wood formed iron spotted brick, stucco wall panels and trim accents, large overhangs with decorative soffit panels and corbels, sloped terra-cotta metal roofing and a Spanish colonial tower clad in copper. The public entries provide a lush landscape experience on all four sides of the building. Using regional plants and soft scape layering, the landscaping offers various colors throughout the year. The main atrium was designed with a barrel-vaulted ceiling with exposed stained wood beams and crown trim, large custom wood doors, decorative metal wrought iron railings and custom metal hardware.
