A component of SAISD’s $515 Million 2010 Bond Program was the renovation of the historic Alamo Stadium and Convocation Center. Affectionately referred to as the “Rockpile,” it is:
- designated as a City of San Antonio Local Historic Landmark,
- a Texas Archeological Landmark Site, and
- recognized in the National Register of Historic Places.
The stadium has served as a sports venue since opening its doors in 1940, while the adjacent Convocation Center has provided an assembly venue since 1949.
While retaining its fundamental historic integrity, the design of the stadium renovations and upgrades included artificial turf play areas, ADA accessibility, concessions, restrooms, locker rooms, sound system, security system, lighting, press box, scoreboard, storage, and the restoration of stone walls. Existing spectator seating was replaced with new bench seating. The facility is now available as a multi-sport venue, including football, track and field, and soccer. The adjacent Convocation Center had minor renovations to upgrade the existing facility, provide additional office space, and offer improved accessibility.
The design of the site amenities included new parking circulation and drop-off areas, as well as infrastructure upgrades consisting of electrical, plumbing, storm drainage system, sidewalks, landscaping, irrigation, and parking. At the west entrance, a new plaza provided additional circulation and vendor space on game days.
