Cathedral Rock Nature Park is a scenic and unique parcel located in an urban greenbelt along Culebra Creek. The park is located at the southern edge of the Edwards Plateau ecological region. While Cathedral Rock is primarily part of the Edwards Plateau, it derives its unique character from the fact that two of the ecological regions which define south and central Texas, the Edwards Plateau and South Texas Plains, converge in this area. Various influences from the Eastern deciduous forest also contribute to the plant community of the park. The junction of these ecological regions creates a park environment with distinctly different habitat types within the park boundaries.
During the Master Planning phase of the Cathedral Rock Park project, the RVK team conducted extensive surveys of the existing natural and cultural resources. Botanical, geologic, historical/archeological and wildlife studies were also completed within the site. Our team conducted extensive site visits utilizing technologies including GPS and aerial photographic interpretation to determine potential trail routes and locate unique natural, scenic and cultural features within the park.
Cathedral Rock Park is an integral part of a greenway system the City of San Antonio intends to link with other creekways in the Leon Creek watershed to create a chain of parks. The resources within this unique park parcel will provide opportunities for interpretation, education, recreation and conservation. Amenities include the mile-long accessible trails, interpretive graphics, playscape, drinking fountain, restroom facilities and parking.
